4th August 2023 – Please note we have added some new flip books for Juniors for Portuguese, Italian and Japanese. We hope to add to these in the near future.

These flip books give students the opportunity to practise and learn their vocabulary,

In this book there is :

A) Part A – page 3-66, a flip book with a page with a picture and a noun, after every page like this there is a page with only a picture. Every second page is like this for practising nouns and to check if children know the correct word for each picture. You have the opportunity to practise them again and again with this flip book.

B) Part B – page 67-83, these are resources to practise the nouns again with cards that you can cut out and fold down the middle. These pictures and these nouns are smaller than the ones in the flip book.

C) Finally, in Part C – page 84-92, in these resources, there is an opportunity for the children to draw a picture for each word.

Note : Maybe it would be useful to print out these pages and bind them at the top to use them, as well as that, maybe you would have the opportunity to photocopy the resource pages at part B) and C) to reuse them.

learningtree.ie was created and developed by Lorraine Dunne. Lorraine is a mother, with one son. She trained as secondary school teacher and Guidance Counsellor. The courses she completed include a B.A. in Humanities, a Higher Diploma in Education, a Higher Diploma in Guidance and Counselling, a Certificate of Attendance from the Dyslexia Association of Ireland , a Diploma in Life Coaching, as well as a number of T.E.L.F. courses. She gained an amount of experience over a nine year period working as a teacher in various educational settings. She also worked as a Guidance Counsellor between two schools and a Youthreach Centre for two years. She currently develops educational materials and resources for children and students.

This site and these materials have been created and developed to help children and people in different areas of education and these materials are also suitable for parents and guardians to use with their child or children. The ebooks to date are mainly to help students learning English. This site also includes materials for other areas of education e.g. multiplication tables etc.

We hope to add new materials for English soon which will include games and activities for helping to develop social skills, this will be followed by more materials for reading skills and sounds of words, many of these materials were developed a number of years ago but due to attention needed in other areas of the business they have not yet been completed.

We also hope to add materials for some other languages e.g. Irish, French and Spanish at a later date, much of this material was created a number of years ago but it needs further work or editing for completion. This may take some time.

At present we have 17 books available in ebook format from our website learningtree.ie and these books are also available in paperback from the various Amazon sites.

Information and Guidelines for books available to date: 

These materials should be done in a relaxed and fun way. Some materials can be done at a faster pace as students become more confident in the task and as part of a game in some activities.

In many of the books there is reference made to teacher/ tutor, tutor here refers to the person tutoring the student or students. This person could be a parent/ guardian, a sibling, a relative, a child minder or an assistant.

As all students are different some students may need more time and assistance in some areas.

In many of these materials students have the opportunity to use many of the following skills: listening, creating and designing, recognition, problem solving, oral, writing, and reading.

Other materials have specific aims for target skills to be developed in the learning of tables, spellings and vowels etc.

Techniques and methods used to develop these materials:

• through font size and style
• page layout and design
• illustrations
• also through ideas developed at learning tree which include:

The Word Tree, display sheets, illustrations, activities, picture memory aids, Super Syllables, oral activities and Word Links.

Each book or activity comes with guidelines on how to use the materials. At the back of each book there is a page for teacher/ tutor notes and observations from the book or activity.

The term common words in these materials refers to words that are used regularly but which are not nouns. While many of these words form different parts of grammar e.g. prepositions, verbs, pronouns etc. at this early stage of learning to read, spell and write the focus is on two areas, nouns and common words.

As far as possible space has been left on the left hand side of the pages in these books so that these pages can be easily stapled together. On some pages that are display sheets or part of an activity, there may be less space on the left side of the page, as these pages can be laminated and cut out for activities.

While some materials have an age range on them e.g. 5+, this is only a guide. The suitability of materials for a student is entirely relative to each individual student and his/ her stage of learning.

Many books include a downloadable checklist.

This site includes a downloadable calendar that can be used for the school year.

These materials can be photocopied for educational purposes, it may be helpful to laminate some materials to make them more durable.

This book includes activities which can be played around the home with your child/children. This book can also be used as a tool in early education. It would be suitable for toddlers over 2 years old and for young children. Sometimes older children can play a key role in organising the activities.

Many of the games involve children using their creativity and imagination as they venture on imaginary outings.

26th November 2109 – Please note changes have been made to our website making it easier to by our ebooks in that previously a person’s company name was looked for as a necessary criteria for buying our books as well as an address and phone number, these have been taken off as criteria to be filled in as most people don’t have companies. As ebooks are downloadable files we don’t need your address. Now a person is required to give a first and last name, a person is also required to give an email address.

9th November 2019 – Now available from learningtree.ie the Sounds For Speech ebook. This ebook is designed to help children and students with sounds used in speech.

Through the use of a variety of activities children and students can try to use different sound patterns. Some elements include colourful illustrations that are associated with particular letters, many of these will be identifiable to students helping to build students’ confidence in these activities.

We hope to have this book available in paperback in the near future.

6th November 2019 – Today our Facebook post is about the Common Word Activities book. This book gives students the opportunity to develop their oral, listening, problem solving and creativity skills.

Some of our resources at learningtree.ie include illustrations, other materials contain word only pages. The Common Word Activities book includes a combination of these.

These activities can be used in a one to one or small group setting. Some exercises can be used in a classroom setting. Many of our books include opportunities for oral work.

This book lets children relax and explore a large quantity of words for each letter of the alphabet, unless it is a letter in English that only a small number of nouns begin with e.g. x and z.

This book also includes word only pages for more practise of words.

This book is designed for practising sounds and it may also be helpful for students who find the pronunciation of certain sounds difficult. This book is called Sounds For Speech. 22 September 2019 – Just an update about a new book available from learningtree.ie, this book is Word Ladder Fun. This books contains activities for the early stages of learning to read. Word Ladder Fun has a pop-up picture for when a student reaches the top of a ladder. For students who may need more assistance here the teacher/ tutor can also use Matching Mats. Students can make sentences orally for these words. This book also includes some other simple little fun games for problem-solving and for the practise of words. These games include The Ding Game, The Rhyme Game and the Word Creator Game.

16th September 2019 – Available now from learningtree.ie – Games & Activities Book 2. Games & Activities Book 2 contains numerous games and activities for the practise of vocabulary and for the introduction of new nouns. In many of these activities students have the opportunity to see these words. Some of the activities encourage students to use problem solving and social skills e.g. treasure hunts and playing shop. Other activities include games for rhyming words and matching nouns. This book also allows children and or students opportunities for creativity in design elements. There is also an element of maths in this book through fractions, shapes, the clock, order lists for the shop game and problem solving in treasure hunts, the shop game and in areas of design. Many of these games and activities are suitable for using with your child/ children at home.

While the suggested age for these activities is 5+ this is only an approximation. As with all the resources available at learningtree.ie the suitability of an activity or resource for use with a child/ person depends on each individuals stage of development and ability. Older children who are more able may have a guiding role in some of these activities. Some of the activities can be changed to suit the needs of the individual or group you are using the resource with.

13th August 2019 – We hope to be back later in the Autumn with more posts on our Facebook page and some new ebooks for the early stages of learning English and also resources for the early stages of development, aspiring to encourage positive social skills, creativity, problem-solving and design.

Many of these activities will be suitable for children of preschool age and for other groups who may find these resources useful. Some of the activities are everyday activities e.g. shopping, going to the Post Office, going to a restaurant, going on a tour, treasure hunts which can be used around the house, bingo and other matching games. The books will include the necessary resources for each activity which can be cut out and used.

9th June 2019 – This week our Facebook post contains a sample page from Match Pictures To Words book.

This book contains 416 commonly used nouns to practise. Students have to identify and match each noun to the correct word for the noun.

This book is a also helpful to students who have English as a second language.

3rd June 2019 – Our Facebook post today contains a sample of an activity from the book “English Alphabet Activities”. This book provides students with many different activities to help build students’ vocabulary.

This book also provides students with an opportunity to see the words for these pictures with these pictures, in some activities.

The activity you choose to use with a child/ student or with a group depends on the aim of the lesson and the stage of learning of the student or group.

27th May 2019 – Last week our Facebook post contained information on the “Word Trail” which is a fun way for students to learn words. This week our post shows a sample page for this activity.

Students make a path using only words that begin with the letter “t”, students have to go through each card to see which cards to use. He/ She also has the opportunity to say the word. In this activity students have a chance to see the word for each of these nouns under each picture.

When the path is complete students can try to make sentences orally with these words. There are numerous other pages which can be used with this activity.

20th May 2019 – Our Facebook post this week is about the “Word Trail”, this is an activity which can be used with students beginning to learn English. This activity can be found in the book English Alphabet Activities. Our Facebook post this week shows a guideline page with a sample path, we hope you have time to explore this. This book provides pages for use with this activity. Students have to create a path choosing words that begin with one particular letter.

As students are doing this activity they will come across new vocabulary as the word for each picture is below each picture. Students can let their path go in any direction. See our post next week to view some materials for this game.

Alternatively students and tutors can create their own materials for this activity.

13th May 2019 – This week our post on Facebook is another sample page from the Multiplication Book, as we regularly put up posts for learning English we thought this might make a change.

Next week we intend to put up a post for a simple game activity from English Alphabet Activities, this game helps students to learn English through using a simple fun activity, we hope you have a chance to see this post.

6th May 2019 – Our “Multiplication Tables”  book is for students at the early stage of understanding the concept of multiplication. This book gives students the chance to practise their multiplication tables through many different activities.

22nd April 2019 – English Reading And Spelling Resources Book – by Learning Tree

This book provides numerous ideas for helping students learn a word or letter he/ she may be having difficulty with through fun and creative activities instead of just focusing on the word or letter. This can also help to reduce anxiety in the student and increase his/ her confidence. The sample word used in this book is    ” light ” and the sample letter is ” j ” but you can use these methods with any word or letter.

6th April 2019 – The Common Words And Nouns Practise Book contains numerous pages of different activities for students to practise common words and nouns through oral, recognition, reading, writing and creativity pages.

Many of these books can also be used with students learning English as an extra language.

31st March 2019 – Stories With And Without Pictures books 1-5 are a set of five books, which can also be bought individually these books use a fun step by step approach for learning to read. These books give students the chance to see words repeated through a number of different activities, in order to increase students’ familiarity and knowledge of these words and this in turn can build students’ confidence for reading.

Stories With And Without Pictures books 1-5 area  set of five books, which can also be bought individually these books use a fun step by step approach for learning to read. These books give students the chance to see words repeated through a number of different activities, in order to increase students’ familiarity and knowledge of these words and this in turn can build students’ confidence for reading.

24th March 2019 – Many of our books have pastel backgrounds and Comic Sans font making them very user friendly for students with dyslexia. They may also be helpful to students with hearing loss or anxiety around reading. Students who may be visually impaired can increase the size of the page in the ebooks to make the text and pictures bigger if he or she has access to a laptop or computer. The colour tones can also be changed if a student has access to a computer or laptop.

All our ebooks can be printed on the paper colour of your choice or as may suit an individual student’s requirements. The ebook facility means that while a book can be downloaded a person can print off a page or pages as required.

16th March 2016 – Please note that at present we can not attach a file on the message section of our Facebook page, which we can normally do. At present, if you wish to receive our ebook which is free to try out please send us your email address in the message area, not the comments area of the Facebook page or to info@learningtree.ie. Hopefully we will be able to attach files again through the message section of our Facebook page in the very near future.

2nd March 2019 – Presently books at learningtree.ie include English books for students at the early stages of learning to read and two maths books, one for multiplication tables practise and the second includes an introduction to long and short multiplication tables. Please note we hope to add to this range in the future to include information on “the clock” and time . We also hope to include a book on sounds and other activities for these. 8th February 2019 – English Reading And Spelling Resources contains a wide variety of resources for students at the early stages of learning English and it may also be helpful for students who need extra support in learning English.

31 January 2019 – The book Noun Grid Sheets contains numerous illustrations for nouns it also contains word only pages, these pages have a mixture of nouns and commonly used everyday words, students can try to spot sound patterns, vowels and double letters etc. in words.

As each box is numbered for reference purposes, this may give students a chance to become more familiar with these numbers and with counting.

23rd January 2019 – In the Stories With And Without Pictures Books 1 – 5 children and students can try to read stories containing some pictures for commonly used nouns, this is followed by a number of different activities so that students get to practise different words from the story. Following this practise of words students can try to read the story without pictures. All the stories are followed by a drawing activity and questions relating to each story.

16th January 2019 – Match Pictures To Words gives children and students the opportunity to become familiar with nouns through a matching activity. This book contains 52 sets with 8 nouns in each set. There are 416 nouns in total in this book.

9th January 2019 – Common Words And Nouns Practise Book includes 12 sets which each contain oral activities, problem solving, creativity and drawing activities, word recognition and writing activities. Students have the opportunity to use a wide range of skills when using this book.

21st December 2018 – The English Reading and Spelling Resources Book is a 225 page book which contains a wide variety of different resources for students at the early stages of learning to read and spell English.

14th December 2018 – The Pictures With Words A -Z book contains over 760 nouns with illustrations. This book also contains shapes, numbers and counting, the alphabet and activity pages throughout.

12th December 2018  – Rainbow Spelling Book gives students the opportunity to act as word detectives as they try to spot words within other words. This book also introduces students to syllables or beats in words.

Rainbow Spelling Book also includes dictation sheets which can be used with students at the end of the book as students become more confident in using these words in written form.

7th December 2018 – At learning tree some of our resources include visual memory aids these can act as a short term fun crutch for students as they learn English. As students become more confident new words are easier to learn. Also in English many of the commonly used longer words with a number of syllables sound as you would expect them to.

1st December 2018 – The aim of the shopping list pages is to give students the chance to become confident in writing shopping lists of everyday common items they may use.

As each household is different the shopping lists can vary, students can make their own shopping lists with items they wish to put on the list, this can make the shopping lists seem more interesting and useful to the students. Some students can imagine a shopping list with items they want on it …….

24th November 2018 – English Alphabet Activities gives children and students the opportunity to become familiar with many different nouns in a fun way through interactive activities.

Children and students have the chance to use problem-solving skills, listening skills and recognition skills in the activities in this book. Students have the opportunity to design their own trails in “Word Trails” and they can collect balloon tickets in the “Balloon Catcher” activity.

18th November 2018 –  Noun Theme Sheets is a book which gives students the opportunity to explore and develop ideas associated with different themes. Students can play games with these themes like “I spy with my little eye something beginning with the letter …” where they can use pictures from the page or they can come up with other nouns associated with the theme being used. Students can also make projects associated with these themes and other themes using drawings and magazine cuttings etc. Students may need to be supervised by an adult and/ or assisted by an adult when using a scissors.

12th November 2018 – In Common Words And Nouns Practise Book students can practise making sentences orally using pictures and words. This book includes a wide variety of other activities for word and sentence practise for learning English. Some pages in this book include illustrations other pages are word only pages.

30th October 2018 – Multiplication Tables is a book that includes a variety of exercise sheets for the early stages of learning and practising tables, some sheets include illustrations.

6th October 2018 – Many of our books and activities provide students with opportunities to do oral work, at the early stages of learning to read and write English.  Both Common Word Activities and the Common Words And Nouns Practise Book contain numerous activities for oral work. Common Word Activities is mainly suited for use in a one to one or small group setting, while the Common Words And Nouns Practise Book could be used in a one to one, small group or classroom setting.

In these materials common words refer to words which are not nouns but which are commonly used.

30th September 2018 – About Match Pictures To Words Activity, this book contains matching activities for 416 nouns. There are 52 sets of 8 words with 8 matching pictures. These materials are easy to organise once they have been cut out, as each word and associated picture is coded.

This book gives students the opportunity to see and practise a wide variety of nouns. These materials can be cut out and laminated to make them more durable, it may be a good idea to round the edges of these cards if they are laminated.

Word Ladder Fun is an activity which rewards effort not simply achievement. All students have the chance to see the surprise picture when they make an effort in this activity. This activity gives students the chance to become familiar with common words in a fun way. This game can be followed on from with other activities for further practise of these words in this book, if this is necessary e.g. making sentences orally with these words.

7th September 2018 – Resources on syllables are included in English Reading And Spelling Resources and Rainbow Spelling Book. Students’ ability to recognise syllables can help them to read, spell and write when learning languages.

“ English Reading And Spelling Resources ” includes a general page for syllables which can be reused and the teacher/ tutor/ student can choose which words they would like to show on the word trees for syllables.

The Mutiplication Tables Practise And Revision book gives students and teacher/ tutors the opportunity to see which tables he or she may need to practise again. 27th August 2018 – The multiplication tables books allow for multiplication practice. Multiplication Tables introduces the concept of multiplication, this book includes numerous different activities for a person to use when introducing the concept of multiplication to a child/ children/ student/ students. The second book Multiplication Tables Practise And Revision allows for a revision of tables and an introduction to short and long multiplication.

20th August 2018 – The English Reading And Spelling Resources Book is designed to help students who may be finding learning to read English difficult. This book is laid out in a way to allow students experience a sense of flow and achievement as he/ she moves through the pages. Sometimes a student may be able to move through ten pages in a session as some pages contain very few words. Many of these pages include pastel backgrounds, large fonts and comic sans font to help to achieve this sense of flow. Some activities include illustrations. This book also includes elements of word focus, that is, it gives students the opportunity to use different elements to help them know and remember a word which he/she may have been experiencing difficulty with.

14th August 2018 – There are presently five books of Stories With And Without Pictures, each of these books contains four stories. First we are introduced to some picture of objects which appear in the story, many of these pictures are very useful everyday nouns. At the next stage as the student tries to read the story he/she will see some pictures throughout the text. This is followed by numerous activities students will do before trying to read the text without pictures and there is also the opportunity for students to answer questions following each story.

7th August 2018 – The spelling materials at Learning Tree are designed to build students’ confidence, at the early stages of learning to read and spell. The activities in one ebook use a rhyming system for small words and activities for these. The second ebook is for words that are a little harder so the syllables are focused on. Also included here are longer English words which are made up of two small words.

1st August 2018 – Some activities at www.learningtree.ie include matching games, recognition activities, association of letters with pictures. Some games include a token system in doing an activity. Many of these activities include colourful illustrations.
